Seeing And Being Seen is a personal work, and evolving collaboration enganging race, ancestry and somatics.
Conceived by Wendy Hambidge. Collaboratively created with Jorge Samuel and Damaris Webb, Standing Together is a personal work and evolving collaboration engaging race, ancestry, and somatics. Seeing and Being Seen is about people standing together to relate through language, movement, and life stories. They show up, stand up, and own up.
"For the last 5 years, I’ve been working on solo material and in collaboration with Brazilian-based artist Jorge Samuel and theater artist Damaris Webb to build this project. It has also involved working with university students in Curitiba, and São Paulo, Brazil and Santa Barbara, California.
"My current body of work explores the role of dance and BMC® as tools for dismantling, disarming, resisting, and recovery from the deep bodily harm of systemic racism and oppression. This work stems from research into my family history, slavery, and racism through a somatic lens. I’ve been working to address and unpack these difficult topics through the generous time and talent of family members, mentors, friends, colleagues, my work as a somatics professional, and dance maker."

In this project the artists practice standing up, showing up, and owning up. Part dance, part theater, part oral history, Standing Together brings together Jorge, a Black Brazilian Dance Specialist, Damaris, a descendant of the American slave trade & Scandinavian immigrants, and Wendy, a woman who traces her lineage to early colonial plantation owners. They show up in relationship to one another and hold space for the hard conversations through their personal interactions and love.
Wendy and her collaborators are looking to raise $3,200 to support remaining project expenses ranging from studio space and residency documentation.
This project has been supported in part by the Regional Arts and Culture Council.
